Vascular Assessment

Assessment of blood flow and circulation

Check your Foot Health. Participate in a 2 Minutes Survey

What is a vascular assessment?

A Vascular assessment is an assessment of lower limb blood flow and circulation. It examines how well blood is passing through the major and minor arteries of the feet and toes.

Why should I have a vascular assessment?

A vascular assessment helps your podiatrists diagnose and monitor Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD), which results from narrowing of the blood vessels supplying the feet. This condition is important to diagnose and monitor as it can cause pain and cramping, increase the risk of problems with your feet and delay how quickly your feet heal following injury.

Who should have a Vascular Assessment?

A Vascular assessment is recommended for the following circumstances:

  • People with Diabetes
  • People with Vascular Disease
  • People with poor circulation
  • You are over 60 years of age
  • You experience cramping at night in bed or when walking
  • Have a history of slow healing wounds or ulcers
  • Have been or currently are a smoker
  • Experience cold feet
  • Experience numb feet

What is involved in a vascular assessment at ProMed Podiatry?

A vascular assessment at ProMed involves the following:

  • Palpate the pulses in your feet
  • Doppler assessment
  • Ankle Brachial Index
  • Toe brachial Index
  • Visual assessment
    • this includes assessment of the skin tone and integrity, hair growth, oedema, varicosities as well as other markers of vascular health.

All of the above procedures are painless and non-invasive. They allow us to determine if there is reduced blood flow or blockages in your feet to your toes. The results of your vascular assessment are provided to your GP and any Specialist you request. As these areas are the furthest from the heart, vascular health is of critical importance.
